About us
About Tapio Measurement Technologies
We are a measurement company based in Espoo, Finland, where our product development and laboratory are. Our instruments, software and troubleshooting service help paper, board, film and foil producers see where the variation in their product is, and where it is likely to come from.
What we do
Tapio has measured and analyzed paper and board quality variation for decades, for mills that want to know whether a roll is good enough to ship and which part of the process puts the variation into the sheet. We work in three areas:
- Roll hardness. Tapio RQP Live is a handheld profiler that measures the hardness profile of a finished roll across its width. Mills use it for paper and board; film producers and converters for plastic film and foil.
- Laboratory measurement and analysis. Tapio Analyzers are laboratory instruments that measure basis weight, caliper, gloss, ash, transmission and other properties along a strip, with every channel aligned to the same positions on the sheet. The Tapio Analysis service is troubleshooting, diagnosis and quality comparison: we measure MD rolls and CD strips sent to our laboratory and report where the variation is, at which wavelengths it occurs and which sources are likely.
- Image analysis. PapEye software analyzes scanned samples: print uniformity and printed line quality for print laboratories, and dirt in pulp, paper and board for quality control.
How we work
We are independent. We don't sell paper machines or online QCS systems and are not tied to any equipment supplier, so you can rely on us as an objective party in your projects.
Much of our software is open-source. Tapio RollView and the Tapio Analysis software are free and open source, and their code is available for further use and modification. Analysis customers get their measurement data and can open it in the same software we use, so the data is never locked into a format only we can read. The PapEye applications are licensed software.
We can compare samples against the Tapio history. We have a measurement archive of over 2000 measurements, and your samples can be read and compared against the statistics of earlier measurements. A Tapio report can say whether your sample is unusual compared to similar paper or board.
We work with researchers. Tapio works in close collaboration with university and company research and development. Tapio has provided Aalto University with a Tapio Analyzer for research on how thickness variation builds up in a roll and excites winder vibration. Tapio is involved in multiple bachelor, master's and doctoral theses.
