Print Quality Analytics with PapEye Mottling for Windows

PapEye Mottling for Windows is a user-friendly software designed to help paper and board professionals assess print mottling and graininess according to the ISO/IEC 24790 standard. Using a standard scanner, you can quickly analyze samples and gain insights into your print quality.

The application is based on computational image analysis of scanned samples. The software enables an objective evaluation of mottling and similar marbling effects in print and provides a single mottling value describing the perceived visual evenness of the printed sample.

Blue printed surface with visible mottling patterns, showing uneven color distribution typical of poor print quality.

Example of bad quality marbled print.

Mottling score 1.79

Blue printed surface with smooth and uniform appearance, showing no visible mottling or defects.

Example of good print quality.

Mottling score 0.40

The human eye recognises mottling effects with different sensitivities, depending on the size of the defect. With flaw sizes of lower wavelengths, the human eye is relatively insensitive, because it can hardly detect such fine variations. However, the human eye is very sensitive to patch sizes within a certain visible range. PapEye Mottling for Windows and the ISO/IEC 24790 standard provide results that correspond well with human perceived print quality.
